On Sunday 26th February 2018, Middleton Band were crowned 2nd section champions after traveling to the Winter Gardens in Blackpool to take part in the North West Area Brass Band Championships. We are delighted to report that the band came first, winning the second section playing Ex Terra Lucem By Jonathan Bates.
The band is absolutely delighted to finally gain a first place win at the area contest and become the 2nd Section North West Champions for 2018.
The band really enjoyed working on the piece and performing it in the packed Pavillion Theatre inside Blackpool’s Winter Gardens.
The band was pleased to welcome our newest member Holly, who plays principal cornet in our youth band to make her contest debut with the senior band. She couldn’t have picked a better contest for her first and sealed it with a glorious victory!
The first two or three highest placed bands in each section “qualify” to represent the North West at the National Finals at the Centaur in Cheltenham in September. Middleton band will be joined at the 2nd section finals by fellow 2nd section North West bands Bollington and Flixton bands. The full results of the 2nd section contest can be found here. To qualify to compete at the National Finals is a tremendous achievement for any band and Middleton band are delighted to be able to represent the North West and our hometown of Middleton at this national level. Middleton Band has previously qualified to attend the National Finals in 1983, 2002, 2007 and 2013 where they represented both the North West and Middleton well by finishing with 1st, 3rd, 1st and 4th places out of fields of around 20 bands from all over the United Kingdom.
Middleton Band will now begin fundraising to meet the significant costs of transporting the band personnel and equipment to Cheltenham for the contest in September.
If you would like to sponsor the band or make a donation towards our trip, you can do this by contacting any band member, our secretary or online by pay pal.
Our first fundraising event is on 18th March at the White House Club, where both our senior and youth bands will provide an entertaining program and there will also be a lovely hot pot and raffle too. To book tickets contact our secretary now or join our facebook event! Tickets will also be available on the door.
